What will the world look like when its largest, most advanced economies have to simultaneously finance huge deficits? Scenarios go from runaway inflation to a global version of slow-growth Japan. No advanced country has defaulted on its government debt since the 1930s, but even that could change. IMF economists note that one reason Western economies survived high debt levels in the past was that investors had few options to move money out of home markets. Now emerging markets can increasingly absorb large amounts of capital, and the day when China, India, and Brazil can shelter investors is on the horizon. That could make debt crises and defaults in rich nations more likely--an ironic turn of globalization.

By more than doubling the maximum rewards and penalties that companies can apply to employees who flunk medical evaluations, the bills could put workers under intense financial pressure to lose weight, stop smoking or even lower their cholesterol.
The initiative, largely eclipsed in the health care debate, builds on a trend that is already in play among some corporations and that more workers will see in the packages they bring home during this month's open enrollment. Some employers offer lower premiums to people who complete personal health assessments; others offer only limited benefit packages to smokers.

Apenas 863 desempregados, de um universo potencial de 300 mil pessoas, estão a beneficiar do apoio do Estado no pagamento do empréstimo à habitação, noticia hoje o Económico.
A medida está em vigor desde finais de Junho e permite adiar o pagamento de metade da prestação do crédito durante um período máximo de 24 meses. Segundo os dados da Direcção Geral do Tesouro e das Finanças, dos 1212 pedidos formalizados nas instituições bancárias, 71,2 por cento foram aprovados.

The 99 bank failures this year compare with 25 last year and three in 2007. It's the highest number in a year since 1992 during the savings-and-loan crisis, when 120 institutions collapsed. Closures peaked during that crisis in 1989, when 534 banks were shuttered.
The most severe financial crisis since the 1930s has hit banks large and small. With unemployment rising, consumer spending slack and businesses shuttered, experts say up to 400 more banks could fail in the next couple of years.

'Countdown to Next Crisis'
Tick-tock, tick-tock, tick-tock ... Can you hear that? It is the countdown to the next financial crisis. I hate to say this just as green shoots are sprouting – the Dow crossed 10,000 points this week, banks are reporting bumper profits and the US recession is all but over – but there is a reason why it is called a “cycle”.
From the South Sea bubble to the 1929 crash, Long Term Capital Management and Enron, the villains in the financial drama have changed constantly. So even if you make policy by looking at the rear-view mirror, as politicians do, you have to look beyond banks.
With all the regulatory eyes on banks, their more discreet rivals are quietly stoking up the risk of a new blow-up. In theory, huge hedge funds should be caught by the Fed’s ability to police any institution that is deemed “systemic”. But in practice, keeping tabs on groups that reveal little about themselves will be tough. And there is always the possibility the epicentre of the next crisis might be a medium-sized hedge fund whose network of trading relationships make them “systemic” – a Bear Stearns of the hedge fund world.

Uma liberalização é supostamente um MEIO para beneficiar consumidores, cidadãos e povo.
Em Portugal, tem como FIM beneficiar uma rede, de políticos oportunistas e empresários sem escrúpulos.

According to local reports, the Ministry of Transport and Communications in Helsinki has pushed through a law that will force telecommunications providers to offer high speed internet connections to all of the country's 5.3 million citizens.

Three of the five members of the Norwegian Nobel Committee had objections to the Nobel Peace Prize being awarded to US President Barack Obama, the Norwegian tabloid Verdens Gang (VG) reported Thursday.
"VG has spoken to a number of sources who confirmed the impression that a majority of the Nobel committee, at first, had not decided to give the peace prize to Barack Obama," the newspaper said.
The committee, appointed by the Norwegian parliament, honoured Obama for "for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples."
The choice for Obama was however strongly supported by committee chairman Thorbjoern Jagland and Sissel Roenbeck, both representatives of the Labour Party.

President Obama announced in March that he would be sending 21,000 additional troops to Afghanistan. But in an unannounced move, the White House has also authorized -- and the Pentagon is deploying -- at least 13,000 troops beyond that number, according to defense officials.
The deployment of the support troops to Afghanistan brings the total increase approved by Obama to 34,000.

As the health care debate moves to the floor of Congress, most of the serious proposals to fulfill President Obama’s original vow to curb costs have fallen victim to organized interests and parochial politics.
“The lobbyists are winning,” said Representative Jim Cooper, a conservative Tennessee Democrat who teaches health policy.
Total health care costs in the last 20 years have doubled to about 16 percent of the economy, with no signs of tapering. Along with universal coverage, Mr. Obama has made controlling those costs a central pillar of his health care overhaul, calling the current course “unsustainable.”

330 Milhões Desviados do Interior para Lisboa
A mudança do regulamento dos fundos comunitários feita pelo Governo durante a campanha eleitoral permite usar verbas destinadas às regiões mais pobres para financiar os gestores dos programas, em Lisboa.
Além de passar a permitir pagar a despesa das equipas de gestão com dinheiro originalmente destinado às regiões pobres, as mudanças feitas pelo Governo ao regulamento especificam que também podem ser financiados com estas verbas os investimentos em Lisboa que, diz o Executivo, podem beneficiar o resto do país. Esta excepção, segundo apurou o JN, estava prevista numa Resolução de Conselho de Ministros mas não nos regulamentos do FEDER e do Fundo de Coesão.

Vaclav Klaus, Presidente checo, precisou ontem que só concluirá a ratificação do Tratado de Lisboa se o seu país obtiver uma cláusula para impedir eventuais exigências de retorno das propriedades confiscadas por Praga aos alemães dos Montes Sudetas em 1945.

Barack Obama - Prémio Nobel da Paz 2009
“Por seus esforços extraordinários para fortalecer a diplomacia internacional e a cooperação entre os povos”, considera o comité do Nobel.
Entre os favoritos estavam Morgan Tsvangirai, ex-líder da oposição e primeiro-ministro de Zimbábue, o dissidente chinês Hu Jia, a ex-refém e activista colombiana Ingrid Betancourt e a negociadora colombiana Piedad Cordoba.
Tsvangirai teve um papel crucial ao amenizar a situação no país que é um inferno na terra. Hu Jia, já vencedor do prémio Sakharov, é a voz de centenas de milhões de seres humanos oprimidos num dos últimos jugos comunistas do globo. Ingrid Betancourt e Piedad Cordoba, são símbolo e salvação das vítimas de uma das últimas guerras do socialismo revolucionário.
Obama nada tem, nada fez. Quer seja no Afeganistão, no Iraque, na Coreia do Norte, na Formosa, no Ceilão, na Tailândia, na Birmânia, na Palestina, no Irão, na Colômbia, em Cuba, na Venezuela, no Congo, na Somália, no Sudão, no Zimbabué. Nem uma vida salvou, nem um conflito resolveu.
Obama venceu com as suas intenções e esforços. Mesmo que despois de bem espremidos esses esforços, nem uma gota de sumo caìa. Mas o marketing e a comunicação criaram uma realidade psicológica diferente - como se de um bear world se tivesse passado para um bull world. Obama é portanto um animador social.
Bastaram 264 horas de presidência, menos de duas semanas, para que Obama fosse nomeado para Nobel (foi empossado a 20 de Janeiro e o prazo limite das nomeações terminou a 1 de Fevereiro).
Com os outros três presidentes dos Estados Unidos também galardoados com um Nobel, não foi tão fácil. Tiveram de fazer algo e esperar mais tempo.
Theodore Roosevelt teve de esperar cinco anos na presidência e de se envolver na resolução do conflito de 1904-05 entre Rússia e Japão para vencer um Nobel.
Woodrow Wilson, só ao fim de seis anos como presidente. Teve ainda de intervir militarmente para ajudar a acabar com a Primeira Grande Guerra, de trabalhar nos acordos de Versalhes e de ser o obreiro da Sociedade das Nações.
A Jimmy Carter foi necessário um mandato presidêncial e mais de 20 anos de trabalho humanitário, para em 2002, ser reconhecido com um Nobel.
Barack Obama não teve de fazer nada, apenas teve de ter aspirações a fazer.

Vietnam and Afghanistam: Learn With the Past Through Books
The two draw decidedly different lessons from the Vietnam War. The first book describes a White House in 1965 being marched into an escalating war by a military viewing the conflict too narrowly to see the perils ahead. President Barack Obama recently finished the book, according to administration officials, and Vice President Joe Biden is reading it now.
The second describes a different administration, in 1972, when a U.S. military that has finally figured out how to counter the insurgency is rejected by political leaders who bow to popular opinion and end the fight.
There are striking similarities between the debates of today and yesteryear. Now, as in the 1960s, the discussion in the administration is how to best defeat a perceived national-security threat. In both periods, the U.S. had partnered with corrupt governments with tainted leaders.

White House Angry With General McChrystal
The relationship between President Barack Obama and the commander of Nato forces in Afghanistan has been put under severe strain by Gen Stanley McChrystal's comments on strategy for the war.
In London, Gen McChrystal, who heads the 68,000 US troops in Afghanistan as well as the 100,000 Nato forces, flatly rejected proposals to switch to a strategy more reliant on drone missile strikes and special forces operations against al-Qaeda.
He told the Institute of International and Strategic Studies that the formula, which is favoured by Vice-President Joe Biden, would lead to "Chaos-istan".

The remarks have been seen by some in the Obama administration as a barbed reference to the slow pace of debate within the White House.
He will hold at least one more this week, but a decision on how far to follow Gen McChrystal's recommendation to send 40,000 more US troops will not be made for several weeks.

U.S. stocks may suffer a “major decline” after climbing to the highest levels in almost a year two weeks ago, according to technical analyst Robert Prechter, founder of Elliott Wave International Inc.
“The real economy is barely recovering while markets are going this way,” Roubini said.
“In the short run we need monetary and fiscal stimulus to avoid another tipping point and to avoid deflation, but now this easy money has already started to create asset bubbles in equities, commodities, credit and emerging markets,” Roubini said. “For the sake of achieving growth stability again and avoiding deflation, we may be planting the seeds of the next cycle of financial instability.”
