European finance officials are concerned the euro’s climb to a 14-month high against the dollar is eroding exports as an aide to French President Nicolas Sarkozy called the move a “disaster” for the economy.
“Excessive volatility” in currency rates is “bad for economic development,” European Central Bank President Jean- Claude Trichet said in an unscheduled appearance at a press conference late yesterday after a meeting of euro-area finance ministers in Luxembourg.
The euro has gained almost 20 percent against the dollar since February
